How to use the word finder
- Pick the length. Every length from 4 to 9 letters works, so the finder also helps with the 6-letter and 7-letter versions of the game.
- Green letters go in their box: the letter is in the word, in exactly that spot.
- Yellow letters go in the box of the spot where your guess had them. They are in the word, just not there. A box can hold more than one letter if several guesses put a yellow letter in the same spot.
- Gray letters go in one line, in any order. If a letter is both yellow (or green) and gray, the finder knows the word has only as many copies as lit up, just like in the game.
- Must contain is for everything else: letters you know are in the word but not where. It is also the fastest way to find words containing letters, say every five-letter word with an R and a T.

The finder replays every guess against the whole dictionary, so words with double letters come out right. Tricky cases such as SPEED, GEESE and ALLOT trip up simple solvers but not this one.
Why the likely answers come first
Daily word puzzles pick everyday words as answers: crane or shout, not crwth or shoes. So the finder splits its results. Likely answers are the 2,044 common five-letter words (and their counterparts for the other lengths), in order of how often they appear in everyday English. Other valid words are plurals, past tenses and rare words: fine as guesses, unlikely as answers. When only a few words are left, the finder also suggests the best next guess: the word whose colors would split the remaining answers into the most groups. For comparison, a strong first guess like RAISE leaves about 51.4 of our 2,022 daily answers on average.
American and British spelling
The finder uses the dictionary you play with: American English by default, or British, Canadian or Australian spelling (colour, favour, aluminium). Your choice is shared with the games on this site, so the UK version and the finder always agree on which words exist.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find words that contain certain letters?
Type the letters in the Must contain box, in any order. Type a letter twice (EE) if the word needs two of it. Pick the length first; the list updates as you type, with everyday words first.
What is the difference between yellow and must contain?
Both mean the letter is in the word. A yellow letter also tells the finder where the letter is not: the spot where your guess had it. If you only know that a letter is somewhere in the word, use must contain.
How does "From my guesses" handle double letters?
It replays each of your guesses against every word in the dictionary, with the same color rules as the game, and keeps only the words that would have given exactly your colors. That is exact even when a guess had the same letter twice and only one copy lit up.
What does "likely answer" mean?
A common everyday word. Daily puzzles, ours included, pick their answers from words like these, never from plurals or rare words. For five letters, 2,044 of the 9,032 words in our dictionary are common.
How is the best next guess chosen?
For every candidate guess, the finder works out which colors it would show against each possible answer, and picks the guess that splits the answers into the most, and most even, groups. It is often a word that cannot be the answer itself but tests the right letters.
Is using a solver cheating?
It is your game. Many players use a finder only after the fourth guess, or to learn which words exist, then play the next puzzle without it. In our infinite game you can practice as much as you like.
