Waffle Unlimited

Six five-letter words cross in a waffle-shaped grid, and their letters are all mixed up. Swap tiles until every one turns green. Every grid can be solved in 10 swaps; you get 15. When you finish, tap New grid and keep going: there are 3,000 of them.

How to play

1. Tap a tile, then another to swap their letters. Each swap counts.
2. Green tiles are right and lock in place. Yellow ones belong somewhere else in the same row or column. Gray ones are not needed in that row or column at all.
3. Fix all six words: the three rows across (top, middle, bottom) and the three columns down (left, middle, right).
4. Save swaps for stars. Solve it in 10 swaps and you keep five of your fifteen: five stars.

Tips for a five-star grid

• Start with the crossings. The nine tiles where a row meets a column tell you about two words at once. Once they are green, the rest falls into place.
• Read the yellows carefully. A yellow tile in the middle of a row belongs in that row only; a yellow corner could belong to its row or its column.
• Count letters. If a row needs two E's and you can see only one yellow E, the other is sitting gray somewhere else on the board.
• Think in pairs. The best swap puts two letters in their right places at once. A swap that fixes only one is sometimes needed, but it costs you a star if you do too many.
• Use common endings. The answers are everyday words, which most often end in E, Y or T and start with S, C or B, so the corners are a good place to start guessing.
